Listings for the week to Sunday 4 May 2025:

It’s a good week for Edinburgh’s amateur theatre companies with three diverse plays on stage. Then there’s glitzy world tour press night and a Scottish Ballet biggie.

The most intriguing amateur play is from EGTG, who have Nick Payne’s Incognito at Assembly Roxy (ends Sat: tickets), which explores the nature of identity and how we are defined by what we remember.

Verity Thompson (Satine) and Nate Landskroner (Christian) in Moulin Rouge (The Musical), which has its press night at the Playhouse this week. Pic Johan Persson

ETA go in a more conventional direction at St Ninian’s Church Hall with Go Back For Murder (ends Sat: tickets): Agatha Christie’s psychic whodunnit.

The Bedlam has Jellyfish (ends Sat: tickets), an absurdist one-act comedy with an anthropomorphic jellyfish (of course) in an EUTC co-pro with Filfbag.

The week’s biggie – and for weeks to come – is Mouline Rouge! The Musical at the Playhouse (tickets). After Wednesday’s press night it’s sitting down to 14 June, ahead of a world tour.

Tickets are selling well for Scottish Ballet’s brilliant dance adaptation by Helen Pickett of Arthur Miller’s The Crucible at the Festival Theatre (Thurs-Sat: tickets), but there are still plenty of great seats left.

However it is returns only for Matthew Seager’s In Other Words at the Studio Theatre (Fri/Sat: tickets) about the transformative power of music when Alzheimer’s strikes.
