What’s on Edinburgh’s stages this week?

So farewell then, Ellen Kent, your opera tours were certainly memorable. Not the most avant garde, but bringing opera to the people in big accessible productions.

Yes, it’s end-of-an-era time at the Playhouse where the indomitable producer brings her last two shows, with Carmen (Thurs: tickets) and Madama Butterfly (Fri: tickets) from Opera International Kyiv. There’s good availability, if you don’t mind sitting at the side.

The week’s big tourer is the RSC’s smash hit comedy The Constant Wife at the Festival Theatre (ends Sat: tickets). Laura Wade’s update of W Somerset Maugham play is “★★★★☆ Enormously entertaining” according to Æ’s Ruth Bennett.

The Lyceum’s “★★★★☆ Accomplishedmusical adaptation of One Day continues (ends April 19: tickets), with best availability over the weekend – and from next week, when the upper circle is yet to go on sale.

The big local amateur production is up at the Church Hill where Edinburgh Music Theatre are cutting loose with Footloose the Musical (ends Sat: tickets), in another ★★★★☆ effort with impressive choreography and ensembles according to Æ’s Hugh Simpson.

The EUSOG are at the Bedlam this week, with a production of Ruddigore: The Witch’s Curse’ that spoofs the stock horror films of the late 20th century (ends Sat: tickets). Sound fun.

Cutting Edge Theatre’s Easter Play, Unbroken, is at West Princes Street Gardens (Sat: details). Here’s hoping it doesn’t get too blowy for this new script, which explores Jesus and disability.

Around the theatres, tourers Northern Broadsides are bringing an adaptation of Dostoyevsky’s Crime and Punishment to the Studio (ends Sat: tickets), while A&E Comedy have Game of Crones at the Traverse (Sat/Sun: tickets).

Edinburgh-made shows are at Assembly Roxy where Locked In Thought have Neil LaBute’s Reasons to be Pretty (Ends Sat: tickets), Augustine United Church where Kitty Milk Theatre have Mike Bartlett’s Cock (Sat/Sun, Tue: tickets) and the Gilded Saloon with Short Attention Span‘s six short plays (Wed: tickets) and Tartan Tabletop’s A Dungeons & Dragons Comedy (Thurs: tickets).
