What’s on Edinburgh’s stages this week?

Not a lot, to be honest. Three one-off performances equates to not so much a lull before the storm that is the Edinburgh Fringe, but a full-on becalming.

The one big local production is down at the Leith Depot where the wonderful PenPal productions are doing their bi-monthly Drama @ the Depot with six scripts written from the prompt of Time’s Up tonight, Monday 7 July 2025 (tickets).

Drama at the Depot. July 2025

The six new pieces, by Till Schindler, Sally Hobson, Mell Flinn, Hannah McGregor, Garrick Pagel and Emma Currie, will be performed script-in-hand by a quartet of actors – Estefany Perez, Adam Edgar, Tiger Mitchell and Liz Strange, under the direction of Ivan Hamshaw-Thomas.

It’s always a good night, with several of those involved in PenPal Productions being alumni of the Village Pub Theatre. So they recognised the importance of the lure of home baking for an evening such as this. So not food only for thought, but food for the tummy too!

Alfresco

You don’t get a lot further from new writing than Shakespeare. So it is to the other end of the writing spectrum that we go on Wednesday, when English touring company Three Inch Fools return to the grounds of Lauriston Castle for a performance of A Midsummer Night’s Dream (Wed: tickets).

The Dream is one of the great plays suited to alfresco performance. A mild night is forecast, with temperatures of around 19º at 7pm curtain up, falling to 17º by sunset at 9.55pm.

There is no seating, so blankets, chairs, cushions and the like are recommended. The performance starts at 7pm, and picnics are welcome from 6pm. Sounds like a perfect evening for it, so let’s hope the fools are up to the job in hand – they do come recommended.

Keeeeeep dancing!

And finally. Yes, finally. The third performance of the week is on Saturday at the Festival Theatre, when those Strictly Come Dancing favourites – particularly for those of a certain age – Anton and Giovanni will be performing their brand new show Together Again (Sat: tickets).

It’s a popular one this one, with the Stalls and Dress Circle all but sold out. However, they have opened the Upper Circle and there are good number of seats up there. Don’t forget your opera glasses though! And if you can’t make Saturday night, the pair are at the Glasgow Theatre Royal on Tuesday (Tue 8 July: tickets) and the Dunfermline Alhambra on Friday (Fri 11 July: tickets).
