The Arabian Nights announced as Xmas show

The Lyceum’s stage is to be adorned with magic carpets, genies and fun this Christmas as it brings an all-new, musical version of The Arabian Nights to life for its 2017/18 Christmas show.

The production will run from November 25 to January 6, 2018 and tickets are going on sale to schools today with the public being able to book from April 4. Full details will be released with the theatre’s 2017/18 season announcement on April 27.

Writing and directing credits for the show have not been announced, however Æ understands that neither role is being taken on by the theatre’s artistic director, David Greig.

The show is set in the market square of old Baghdad. It is a place of wonders. Treasures from all over the world find their way to the ancient city, as do the people. Charming pickpockets and penniless writers, carpet makers, coffee vendors, and fortune tellers all vie for business in this cosmopolitan whirl.

In the middle of it all is a young girl with a big imagination – a girl called Scheherezade. She spends her days weaving stories from the world and characters around her – much to the annoyance of her father, an antique dealer who wishes his dreamy daughter would help out once in a while.

When the wicked Sultan announces a terrible plan, one which threatens the very essence of this wondrous world, it might just be Scheherezade’s imagination that can save the day. But only if she can catch the Sultan in her web of stories…

Will imagination save the world?

David Greig, the Lyceum’s artistic director says of the show: “The Arabian Nights is a story about storytelling. It’s about Scheherazde, a girl who saves the day with her imagination.

“This new version sets the tale among the glamour and bustle of the market place of old Baghdad. A place where all the peoples and trades and customs of the world mix and mingle. A place under threat from an authoritarian Sultan.

“Will imagination save the world? I can’t wait to see The Lyceum stage adorned with magic carpets, genies and fun, familiar characters revisited in the new, exciting, context of a musical family show.”
