MAMA bound for Loretto

Wedding Singer is Easter break

The Brunton might be dark but local amateurs MAMA, the Musselburgh Amateur Musicals Association, are bringing light to the town with a new production of The Wedding Singer.

True to their roots – “we’re MAMA, not HAMA!” they cry – the company are forgoing any temptations to move further East to Haddington and are staging the Eighties rom-com musical at the 200-seat Loretto School theatre.

This a real humdinger, feel-good musical of a kind which is certainly needed at the moment. Set in 1985, it’s a chance for those of us who were there to indulge in a bit of nostalgia for a decade which doesn’t really feel 40 years ago. And those who weren’t, to revel in a mullet overdose.

MAMA’s production stars Euan Dixon as Robbie Hart, the guy with a broken heart who’s stuck in one of the most romantic jobs in the world, a wedding singer. He loses all hope when he is abandoned at the altar by his fiancé. But there is always another chance, surely…

The Wedding Singer is a fantastic choice for our charity theatre group as it offers something for everyone — vibrant ensemble numbers, heartfelt moments, and plenty of comedy that appeals across generations,” MAMA’s president Alexa Hill told Æ.

“Its varied roles allow performers of all ages and abilities to shine, whether in leading parts, dance numbers, or character-driven scenes, making it truly inclusive.”

energy, familiarity, and joy

The decision not to go to the Corn Exchange has not been an easy one. Rehearsals are at the QMU’s black box space and while the Loretto has the basics, it doesn’t have all the facilities that Brunton had, as Hill acknowledges.

“At a time when we are adapting to a temporary theatre space due to the ongoing closure of The Brunton, this show brings energy, familiarity, and joy to both cast and audiences alike,” she says.

“Despite the added challenges of relocation, increased costs, and limited facilities, The Wedding Singer is a flexible, feel-good production that can be staged creatively, helping us continue to deliver high-quality, accessible theatre for our community.”
