A sentient nose has become the world’s first trillionaire in Nosejob, from Heads on Crooked at Paradise in Augustines, a dark comedy about Internet culture and social class.

This ‘brainrot reimagining’ of Nikolai Gogol’s short story The Nose translates Russian satire into the modern day: Max Kovalyev (Abi Price) believes that his nose Max Kovalyev (Adam Edgar) belongs on his face. It is, however, somewhat difficult to take the world’s first trillionaire to court. While Max (Price) shares his story online and starts his own GoFundMe, Max (Edgar) is launching his company’s newest product, Rescent.

Nosejob is an immersive sensory experience. The talented crew have created the theatrical representation of doomscrolling – projection screens playing funny reels and slideshows, loud music of various genres, influencers, Internet slang, and actors acting out advertisements (which can’t be skipped, of course).

As you might expect, audience interactions are bizarre. A man in a nose suit unashamedly sniffs the front row, for instance, then a woman carefully inspects the shapes of our noses. While the actors embrace the show’s absurdity with aplomb, for the audience the offbeat sense of humour takes some getting used to.

Adam Edgar (the Nose) does the heavy lifting in his eye-catching nose costume (made by Skye Beautyman). He portrays a wide range of emotion through voice and theatrical physicality; he jumps, waves his arms around, and even manages a full-body sneeze. Yet, as comical as he looks, the Nose (also known as Max Kovalyev) is a filthy rich capitalist with his nose in the air, possessing all of the worst human traits. Simultaneously arrogant and insecure, his presence is impossible to ignore (and not just because he’s wearing a giant nose suit).

unreasonable whims

Abi Price is similarly marvellous in her roles as Max Kovalyev and Chorus Two, seamlessly switching into a different character by putting on a fake nose. One of the best scenes in the show is when she synchronises her silent acting with a melodramatic opera aria playing in the background. Her enthusiasm shines through in everything she does onstage, whether it is Max’s increasingly maniacal desperation or an influencer’s alpha male posturing.

Estefany Perez is the linchpin of the show, complementing Edgar and Price in multiple roles. Most notably, she plays the Advisor: the long-suffering employee of the Nose who endures his verbal abuse and caters to his unreasonable whims. The Advisor is easily the most sympathetic character. In a production as weird and wacky as Nosejob, Perez adds emotional weight by occasionally playing it straight.

While it feels like a fever dream at times, Nosejob is a delightfully absurd production satirising our era of technology/capitalism, and unlikely to be akin to anything you’ve ever experienced before.
