Trav revives Man to Man with Tilda Swinton

Tilda Swinton is returning to the live theatre stage for the first time in over 30 years as Ella/Max Gericke in a revival of the Traverse – Royal Court co-production of Manfred Karge’s Man to Man this Autumn 2026.

Re-uniting its original creative team, the production will play the Traverse from Thursday 29 October to Saturday 7 November, following a run at London’s Royal Court Theatre where it will open on Saturday 5 September 2026. Following the Traverse dates the production will tour to Berlin and New York. Traverse tickets go “on sale soon“.

Man to Man tells the story of Ella Gericke, a woman who assumes the identity of her dead husband in order to survive. Spanning decades of political upheaval and social change, the play explores identity, survival, power and belonging with a startling contemporary resonance.

It originally opened at the Traverse in 1987, with the then 26-year-old Tilda Swinton taking on the solo role. The production became a defining moment in both Swinton’s career and the history of the Traverse, earning widespread critical acclaim and establishing her as one of the most compelling stage performers of her generation.

Swinton last performed in live theatre in the 1988 transfer of Man to Man to the Royal Court Theatre.

This 2026 revival reunites the multi-award-winning creative team, including director Stephen Unwin, who revised Anthony Vivis’s translation of Manfred Karge’s script, designer Bunny Christie and lighting designer Ben Ormerod. After playing the Traverse, it will transfer to the Berliner Ensemble and then have a run in New York City in Spring 2027.

Announcing the production Ellen Gledhill, the Traverse’s executive director, said: “Man to Man is a remarkable piece of theatre that continues to reveal something new with each generation that encounters it.

“Nearly forty years after its UK premiere at the Traverse, its exploration of identity, humanity and survival feels every bit as urgent and thought-provoking as ever, speaking directly to many of the social and political questions that continue to shape our lives today.

“We’re proud that the play’s UK story began on our stage in 1987. To welcome it back to Edinburgh, and to the theatre where audiences first encountered it, feels both significant and deeply moving.

“The opportunity to see Tilda Swinton revisit a role that has become such an important part of both the production’s legacy and the Traverse’s history is a rare privilege, and one we’re excited to share with Edinburgh audiences.”

Commenting on the revival, Stephen Unwin said: “‘Never go back!’, it’s often said, but revisiting Manfred Karge’s Man to Man with Tilda Swinton once again wearing the Y-fronts, Bunny Christie designing and Ben Ormerod lighting, is a rare creative opportunity. It will be thrilling to see this remarkable play bloom again.”
