Edinburgh companies are well represented in the Musicals section of the fringe programme, with 25 different productions. Thanks largely to the eight musicals being staged by Captivate.
Cats
★★★★☆ Spectacular
The Beyond Broadway Experience return to the Festival Theatre with their annual showcase of local youth talent, bringing together 200 young people for a spectacular performance of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Cats.
The Music Man
★★★★☆ Massive
Huge production numbers and constant energy dominate Southern Light’s The Music Man at the Festival Theatre. Undeniably frothy and not a little silly, it has a scale and magnetism that draw the audience in.
The Drifters’ Girl
★★★☆☆ Stories still unsung
The Drifters Girl, at the Playhouse this week as part of a UK tour, provides plenty of Drifters hits, hung around the story of Faye Treadwell, who managed the group up until 2001.
Jojo gets Kinky at Playhouse
Johannes Radebe to star in Kinky Boots tour coming to Playhouse
A new production of Kinky Boots the Musical, staring Johannes Radebe as Lola and Dan Partridge as Charlie Price, will tour to Edinburgh’s Playhouse and the Glasgow King’s in February 2025.
The Addams Family
★★★★☆ Finger clicking good
Edinburgh Music Theatre have a beautifully concise production of The Addams Family at the Church Hill Theatre to Saturday. It hits its mark bang on, from the very first finger click of that iconic introduction right up its full blown love-in finale.
Chicago razzles back
Playhouse dates for Feb 2024
The latest UK tour of Chicago has announced new venues, including a week at both the Edinburgh Playhouse (Tue 4 – Sat 8 Feb 2025) and the Glasgow Kings (Mon 18 – Sat 23 Aug 2025).

The Edinburgh University Savoy Opera Group has created an inventive updating of Gilbert and Sullivan in Biolanthe, running in the intimate Tech Cube 0 at Summerhall for three performances only.
Sunshine on Leith

The Bohemians Lyric Opera Company’s production of Sunshine on Leith at the Church Hill Theatre is tuneful, colourful, emotionally direct and builds up a considerable head of steam.

24 Hour Challenge: Impressive
The Musselburgh Amateur Musical Association made a strong and entertaining go of their 24 hour Musical Challenge – to learn, rehearse and perform a musical all in 24 hours, staging the final result on Saturday night at the Portobello Town Hall.
