PPP to stream mini season From The Archives

Glasgow’s A Play, Pie and a Pint lunchtime theatre is to stream a mini season of its existing hit shows on YouTube, one a week, initially over the next three weeks.

The first three shows of the mini season comprise Morag Fullarton’s Sunset Boulevard: The Lunchtime Cut; Brooks & King’s Wee Free! The Musical – featuring a performance by the late Pauline Knowles – and finally Andy McGregor’s Spuds.

Each production will stream over five days only, from Wednesday 1pm until the following Sunday at 2pm. The first online will be Sunset Boulevard: The Lunchtime Cut – staring Juliet Cadzow, John Kielty, Mark McDonnell and Frances Thorburn – streaming from Wednesday 6 May at 1pm.

The actors, writers, composers and directors of the original productions and the film makers who captured them on the medium of film have all given their permission to show their work for PPP online.

In return, PPP is asking all audience members to make a donation to NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde. It has set up a JustGiving page here https://bit.ly/JustGiving-PPP-NH.

So grab a bottle of your favourite house beer, break out your best pie recipe and get baking, it’s time for a lunchtime watch-along.

The PPP May Lockdown Mini Season

Sunset Boulevard: The Lunchtime Cut
Written and directed by Morag Fullarton
Streaming 1pm, Wed 6 – 2pm Sun 10 May.
Staring: Juliet Cadzow, John Kielty, Mark McDonnell and Frances Thorburn.

Billy Wilder’s classic film noir is both a savage indictment of the star system (and the monsters it creates) and a depiction of the writer’s impotence in Hollywood. Morag Fullarton’s adaption retains the dark comic heart of the original while turning it into a theatrical treat.

A bitter comedy and a dark tragedy, the story centres on a wealthy, egotistical, faded star, Norma Desmond, desperate to ‘return to the millions of fans she deserted’, and young, down-on-his luck writer, Joe Gillis, who sees an opportunity to exploit the situation.

Wee Free! The Musical
By Brooks & King. Directed By Ken Alexander
Streaming 1pm, Wed 13 – 2pm Sun 17 May 2020.
Staring: Neshla Caplan, George Drennan, Chris Forbes and Pauline Knowles.

1984. Morna escapes the city to teach music on the remote Isle of Munst. When she accidentally marries a pillar of the community, she finds herself at odds with the quirks of The Kirk and the strange ways of the locals. Can a New Romantic survive on an island ruled by The Old Testament?

PPP says: “We would like to thank the family of Pauline Knowles who have kindly given their blessing to streaming Wee Free. It is a chance for friends and colleagues to once more appreciate Pauline’s superb talent. She was a joy to work with!”

Spuds
Written and directed by Andy McGregor
Streaming: 1pm, Wed 20 – 2pm Sun 24 May 2020.
Staring: Darren Brownlie, Richard Conlon & Dawn Sievewright

When David MacGonigle’s wife dies, his perfect middle-class life collapses around him. But a freak occurrence, involving mouldy chips and Iron Brew, leads to his discovery of a new designer drug, Spuds. Soon he has built the ultimate criminal empire, but at what cost? A new musical comedy about grief, greed and grease.

All shows will stream here, on A Play A Pie and A Pint’s YouTube channel.
