Macbeth (an undoing), by Zinnie Harris after William Shakespeare at the Lyceum, is the latest in a long line of rewritings of Macbeth. While it is undoubtedly thought-provoking, it ends up more perplexing than engrossing.

★★★★☆ Necessarily nightmarish:
The blood-soaked events of The Duchess [of Malfi], a co-production between the Lyceum and the Citizens Theatre, are almost unwatchably intense at times. As a depiction of timeless and timely considerations, however, this production is hard to beat.

Stark and tense, Ivo van Hove’s production of Hedda Gabler for the English National Theatre and touring to the Festival Theatre all week, is a thoroughly unnerving reading of Ibsen’s great play.
