EdFringe 2016
Coup de Grace
★★☆☆☆ Disjointed:
Shows on a Shoestring’s Coup de Grâce starts off strong, the original plot harbours potential – but fails to make the most of it, with a script and structure which falls flat.
In Fidelity
✭✭✭✭✩ In Triguing:
Combining a dating show, with an exploration on the scientific basis of love, In Fidelity at the Traverse is great fun and deceptively clever.
Unseen
✭✭✭✭✩ Should be seen:
Two excellent performances drive Unseen, Ashley McLean’s two hander at Spotlites which deals with the ‘unseen’ nature of homelessness.
The AniMotion Show: Peace – War
★★☆☆☆ Better in theory:
Boasting plenty of talent but lacking a clear drive, The AniMotion Show is an interesting multimedia experiment in Gilded Balloon at the Museum which gets lost in its own abstractions.
Bugsy Malone
★★★☆☆ Enjoyable:
Well drilled and cleverly staged, Captivate Theatre’s Bugsy Malone in the Famous Spiegeltent is a fast-moving and fun affair.
Spring Awakening
★★★★☆ Visceral:
Scuzzy and raw in all the right ways, Eusog’s take on the Rock musical version of Frank Wedenkind’s play about burgeoning youth sexuality has a vital edge to it.
Enron
★★★☆☆ Ambitious:
Hugely ambitious, Edinburgh Theatre Arts’ production of Lucy Prebble’s Enron at St Ninian’s is uneven but always intriguing, and gets a lot right.
Panti: High Heels in Low Places
✭✭✭✭✩ Sparkling:
Ireland’s reigning monarch sparkles in a performance at the Traverse which is often at odds with its all too civil format.
