New language of clowning for Roxy performance

Saras Feijoo brings a new theatrical performance to the Assembly Roxy this weekend with Blooming Surprise, a piece of modern clowning aimed at an adult audience.

Devised and performed by Feijoo as a solo show, Blooming Surprise is set in an airport and takes its audience on an unexpected journey into their own hearts, where hope can bloom, ever fresh.

Saras was recently at the Roxy as part of the Clown Cabaret Scratch Night, curated in collaboration with Tim Licata (Plutot la Vie) and Melanie Jordan, which has created a space for emerging and experienced clown performers.

Subtitled “A story about loneliness, hope and love for oneself”, this new work will take audiences in a different direction from that which they might expect from a traditional circus clown, as Saras indicates when describing her attitude to her art.

She says: “Contemporary clown is about vulnerability and connection with the audience. This kind of clown is not that which remind us of our nightmares but one that is born out of our little craziness, our most internal feelings, emotions, illusions, fears, desires. It is based in honesty.

“Through their eyes, a clown becomes an open diary that shares its story with the audience, while it is being written! Full of feelings, the clown shares completely, almost involuntarily, with innocence, in the moment and with all their heart.”

Aided by lighting design by Sergey Jakovsky, who recently collaborated with Shona Reppe on five star fringe-hit Huff, and music by Gavin Taylor and Barney Strachan, Saras invites her audience to “explore a new language, connect with your deepest emotions, and to believe in yourself and your dreams, for the future”.
