What’s on Edinburgh’s stages this week?
Not a lot, it must be said. Just the two bona fide pieces of theatre for your delectation over this seven days. Both only on for one day. The mid-January doldrums really have been reached.
McScrooge
★★★★☆ Beautiful adaptation
McScrooge by Alan Mountford and Leith’s Citadel Arts Group for the Scottish Dementia Arts Festival is a beautiful adaptation of Dickens’ A Christmas Carol, designed to meet the particular needs of its audience, while retaining the key elements of the original novella.
Tales from the Towpath
★★★★☆ Water-born histories
It’s not often that productions begin with a safety warning – and the reassurance that you are unlikely to drown if the venue sinks – but not many productions are staged on a barge on the Union Canal.
Ghosts of North Leith
★★★★☆ A haunting tale
Following a trial reading at Leith Festival earlier this year, the Ghosts of North Leith have been brought home in Citadel Arts Group’s production, which returns them to the church near by the cemetery where they are buried.

There’s big news from the amateur scene this week with the Edinburgh Gang Show, Saughtonhall Drama Group, Citadel Arts group and a new musical under the auspices of Bare Productions all on stage.
North Leith Limbo
Slavery “central issue” in play inspired by Leith graves
The Ghosts of North Leith, at North Leith Parish Church for three nights only this week, sees the Citadel Arts Group weave together scripts based on stories behind graves in the Coburg Street Burial Ground.
Mannequins at the Pianodrome
Citadel Arts stages new plays in Ocean Terminal
The Citadel Arts Group is to stage an evening of new works under the title A Mannequin for All Seasons, in the Ocean Terminal, where the Pianodrome has set up its latest temporary residency in the Wee Hub at the Old Debenhams.
Leithers Live – the Custom House Play

The Citadel Arts Group sketch out the history Leith as seen through the women folk of one family in this clever piece of promenade drama which plays through the rooms of the Leith Custom House for four performances only.
The Aliens
★★★★☆ Wartime drama
Set in Leith during World War 2, The Aliens is a short slice of life, that zooms in on soldiers returning from Dunkirk at the time Mussolini announced Italy’s entry to the war in support of Germany.
Home Comfort with Citadel
New play based on memories of Leith gets online reading:
Home Comfort, a new play by Vincent Maguire based on living memories of Isa’s Chat ‘N’ Chew Cafe in Portland Place in Leith, has a new online rehearsed reading from Citadel Arts.
