The Beatles Were A Boyband
★★★★☆ Deeply affecting
The Beatles Were A Boyband, Rachel O’Regan’s Fringe First winning play for F-Bomb Theatre, returns to the Gilded Balloon for a short run this year. Written in the wake of some high profile murders, it sadly still feels relevant a year on.

The Hearth
★★★★☆ Moving reflections
In The Hearth from Brite Theater, multi-instrumentalist and storyteller Tom Oakes uses the hearth; that place in the centre of a home where a fire is traditionally lit, to spark a series of moving reflections on life and memory.

PPP: Variant
★★★★☆ Unsettling
There is a pleasing intransigence to Variant by Peter Arnott, the latest Play, Pie and a Pint from Oran Mor at the Traverse and Arnott’s fiftieth professionally produced play.

Sandcastles
★★★☆☆ Endearing
Sandcastles, Steve McMahon’s warm and thoughtful new play is brought to life by a charismatic cast, directed by Kolbrún Björt Sigfúsdóttir, in this Brite Theatre production at the Assembly Rooms.

Red Alert – Cancer
★★★☆☆ Real life
In Red Alert – Cancer, Allan Wilson tells of his red-headed family’s entanglement with cancer in a performance that feels as close to documentary as it does theatre, at the Zoo Playground to Saturday 13 August.

Maryland script-in-hand readings
Lucy Kirkwood’s ‘howl of a play’ gets Edinburgh performances
Lucy Kirkwood’s Maryland, written in response to the murders of Sarah Everard and Sabina Nessa, is to get two script-in-hand productions in Edinburgh, at Southside Community Centre this Sat 20 Nov 2021 and at the Traverse the following week.

(Can This Be) Home
★★★☆☆ Uneasy construction:
(Can This Be) Home, Brite Theater’s production at the Storytelling Centre, is an emotive piece, stating important truths but not always cohering.

Theatre Uncut’s 2018 free-to-perform scripts, the Power Plays, are to get script-in-hand performances at the Traverse theatre next week, on Thursday 7 June 2018 from the Braw Fox theatre company.
