Edinburgh District heats of SCDA one-act competition held this week

By Thom Dibdin

It is a busy week for those of Edinburgh’s amateur companies which are members of the Scottish Community Drama Association as the first heats of its 79th annual one-act play competition are held at St Serf’s Hall, Goldenacre.

The heats, open to all SCDA Edinburgh District groups, will be held on this Thursday 17 to Saturday 19 February with the start time of 7pm. Adjudication will be by the Fife-based playwright Ron Nicol.

Four of the SCDA’s thirteen registered Edinburgh-based groups are taking part in the competition, with the Livingston Players also putting in an appearance with A Dogs Life. However, teams from Leitheatre (Specter and A Time For Farewells) and St Serf’s Players (This Santa Thing, Gloria’s Angel and Alas Poor Geoffrey) are both putting in more than one production, bringing the number of performances to eight over the three nights.

The only company to enter an original play is Holy Cow Performing Arts which is presenting Shadjam by company member Vasudev Menon. The Mercators’ production of The Queensferry Diligence is a non-competitive entry.

The winners of the heat will go on to compete in the Eastern Division final a month later on 17-19 March at the Howden Centre in Livingston. From then, the Scottish Final is on May at Eden Court in Inverness.

Over the whole of Scotland, entries to the competition are up an eighth, from 136 entries in 2010 to 153 entries this year. The winners of last year’s Edinburgh District heat were Leitheatre with One Day I Met Myself Coming Home by Rebecca Russell.

Full details of this year’s performances are:
