Review by Yvonne Paterson

The Bohemians Lyric Opera Company is back for its traditional Fringe showcase, alighting on St Andrew’s and St George’s for two nights only with A Bohemian Broadway.

As the title suggests, this showcases a selection of much loved songs from some of the greatest Broadway musicals, chosen and put together by Musical Director Finlay Turnbull.

The company for A Bohemian Broadway

Opening Up from Waitress is a suitable starting point and sees the company take to the stage dressed all in black apart from a personal choice accessory in either red, yellow, green or blue such as a tie, a ribbon or a dickie bow. It’s a nice touch creating a feeling of individuality yet staying coherent.

Cosette Bolt takes the lead vocals for the opening number backed by the ensemble. Bolt has a lovely voice and the number sets the tone for the evening ahead. Later,  Bolt shines even brighter with No One Else from Comet.

There are, however, a few issues with sound levels throughout the production. At points the band seems to be overpower the singers and drowning out some of the lyrics. Which is a little distracting, even more so during solo performances.

energetic

That being said, performances from the likes of Colin Sutherland, who connects well to the character in Words Fail from Dear Evan Hansen, and Alisha Miranda in Maybe this time from Cabaret are engaging. Kirsty Hogg gives an energetic performance as she takes the lead vocals in Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious from Mary Poppins. Ciara McBrien’s choreography brings a lot of fun to the number and it’s tempting not to sing along with the cast.

The highlight of the evening is At The End of The Day from Les Miserables. The company give a fantastic performance, collectively bringing the song alive but each playing their own part and their voices blending with wonderful harmonies. It is in these big numbers that the Bohemians shine brightest and leave the best impression.

A Bohemian Broadway is an enjoyable production mixing some of the oldest and some of the newest hits from Broadway so there is something for everyone.

  1. I happened upon this show while visiting Edinburgh and was BLOWN AWAY by what an entertaining night it was! My husband and I are huge Broadway fans and saw some talent last night equal to some of the best! We’ve seen a number of other shows at the Fringe Festival and thought they were good; a little unpolished but fun. This one I thought was so well put together and we really enjoyed it! Going again to see it tonight!
