Amelie for Edinburgh
Amélie the Musical to play King’s
The UK premiere production of Amélie the Musical is set to tour to the Edinburgh King’s in June 2019 with dates at the Glasgow King’s in August 2019.
The show, based on the award-winning 2001 French film, will open at Newbury’s Watermill Theatre in April before embarking on a ten venue tour starting at the New Wimbledon Theatre in May and ending in Woking at the end of August.
The original romantic French comedy – full title Le Fabuleux Destin d’Amélie Poulain – starred Audrey Tautou as Amélie and was directed by Jean-Pierre Jeunet. Written by Jeunet with Guillaume Laurant it was nominated for five Academy Awards.
It is a whimsical depiction of contemporary Parisian life which tells of shy waitress Amélie, who decides to change the lives of those around her for the better, while struggling with her own isolation.
The musical adaptation has a book by Craig Lucas with music by Hem’s Daniel Messe, who wrote the lyrics with Nathan Tysen. It premiered in Berkeley in 2015 and played Broadway for 56 performances – and 27 previews – in 2017.
The UK tour will be directed by Michael Fentiman, with casting to be announced. Fentiman said, “As a theatre maker, staging Amélie as a musical is one of those exciting, terrifying challenges, that you absolutely cannot turn down.
“It is a gentle, magical and uncynically joyous piece – that takes its audience on a surreal flight of fancy, into the mind of an extraordinary young woman, Amélie Poulain.”
