Beauty and Beast’s Edinburgh Date
Playhouse tickets for 2021 tour on sale Thurs 26 Nov.
Tickets for the October 2021 dates at the Edinburgh Playhouse of the new, “reimagined” production of Disney’s Beauty and the Beast go on sale at 12 noon today, Thursday 26 November 2020.
The show has confirmed three dates of a proposed 2021 tour, visiting Bristol’s Hippodrome from 12 August, the Liverpool Empire from 23 September and the Edinburgh Playhouse from Thursday 21 October to Saturday 27 November 2021.
The completely new production will again be directed by Rob Roth and is hoped to open at the Leicester Curve for a five week run in May before going to Dublin.
Rob Roth said: “The entire original creative team has reassembled, and we’ve reimagined the visual aspects of the show completely, making full use of all the newest technologies in stage craft, lighting and costume construction.
“Many of these elements hadn’t been invented when we first developed the show. So we are creating something brand new from this beloved ‘tale as old as time’. I speak for the whole team when I say fortunate we all feel to be given the opportunity to reimagine the show for the 21st century.”
lush period sound
The show will retain the lush period sound of the Oscar-winning and Tony-nominated score which brought classics including Be Our Guest and Beauty and the Beast from the film and Change in Me, added to the musical production in 1998 and retained thereafter
However, it will be interpreted afresh with new dance arrangements by David Chase, allowing original choreographer Matt West to re-visit his work. Michael Kosarin and Danny Troob, longtime collaborators with composer Alan Menkin, will be musical supervisor/vocal arranger and orchestrator.
The structure and tone of the story and score – as conceived for the 1991 film – were structured like a stage musical, with the songs being integral to plot and characterisation rather than only ornamental or digressions.
This innovation from Menkin and lyricist Howard Ashman is credited with the 1990’s Disney animation renaissance that went on to create such film classics as Aladdin, The Lion King and Hunchback of Notre Dame and helped re-introduce the book musical form to popular culture.
Disney’s Beauty and the Beast first dropped into the Playhouse at the end of its first UK tour in 2003 and played every couple of years until 2009. Southern Light Opera staged the UK amateur premiere of the show at the King’s in February 2010.
