Casting call for Steel Magnolias

Edinburgh amateur company Blackout Productions is to stage Robert Harling’s Steel Magnolias at Edinburgh Academy in February 2018 and has put out an open call for auditions.

The production will be directed by Gabrielle Pavone-Clark and auditions will be held on Thursday October 5 2017 at St Michael’s Church, Slateford, with all six roles up for grabs.

The play premiered in 1987 and was made famous by the 1989 movie, staring Sally Field, Dolly Parton, Shirley MacLaine, Daryl Hannah, Olympia Dukakis and Julia Roberts.

A comedy-drama it tells the story of six woman who meet regularly in a Louisiana beauty salon run by Truvy Jones. Set in the salon over a period of three years it is by turns hilarious, tragic and touching. As the title suggests, it shows that the woman are as delicate as Magnolias but as tough as Steel.

This will be Blackout’s third production after staging the 25th Annual Putnam Spelling Bee in 2013 and Proof in 2015.

According to the call-out: “We are looking for six female leads to bring this story to life. With characters ranging from the young shy beauty salon assistant to a wise cracking southern lady, this play needs a diverse cast of six across all age ranges.”

Anyone wanting to book an audition slot should contact Blackout on blackoutproductions@live.co.uk.
