Bohemians grab Shrek!
Shrek to play King’s in 2020
Edinburgh’s Bohemians Lyric Opera Company is to stage an amateur production of Shrek The Musical at the King’s theatre in Spring 2020.
The Bohemians are one of only 114 amateur companies throughout the UK to gain a licence to stage the hit musical, from a total of 550 applicants. The current professional UK and Ireland tour which opened at the Playhouse last Christmas is on the road through to January 2019.
Making the announcement on Facebook and Twitter, the company declared themselves “over the moon” and “absolutely thrilled” to to have secured the rights. The production is expected to run at the King’s during March 2020.
Building on the the 2001 Dreamworks movie – which itself took its inspiration from William Steig’s book – Shrek the Musical tells of a an ogre who is big, ugly, fierce, green and Scottish (but ultimately just misunderstood) – and his ‘noble steed’, a fast-talking donkey.
The unlikely couple embark on a quest to rescue the beautiful (if slightly temperamental) Princess Fiona from a fire-breathing, love-sick dragon. On their way they fall foul of the diminutive Lord Farquaad, a gang of fairytale misfits and a biscuit with attitude.
Men wanted
The company is currently in rehearsals for The Wedding Singer which will play at the King’s from Wednesday 20 to Saturday 23 March 2019. Although the majority of roles are cast, the Bohemians are still looking for male performers to join up for the ensemble.
The major stipulation for anyone who would like to join the company at the King’s in March is that they have to be able to “act like a drunk wedding guest” – although one imagines that the ability to sing a note or two and put on some moves would also come in handy.
