Darius to reprise Funny Girl role opposite Sheridan Smith
The Edinburgh Playhouse has announced that Darius Campbell will be playing the role of Nick Arnstein opposite Sheridan Smith as Fanny Brice in Funny Girl at the theatre this week to Saturday 15 April 2017.
The theatre had previously announced that Chris Peluso would be playing the role as the major UK tour arrives in Edinburgh. Peluso and Campbell are alternating the role of Arnstein, the entrepreneur and gambler who became Fanny Brice’s husband.
This week’s performances will be Sheridan Smith’s only Scottish dates in the role of Fanny Brice. She is alternating the role with Natasha J Barnes, who has just been in Aberdeen and is booked to appear when the production reaches the Glasgow King’s at the end of May.
Funny Girl tells the story of Fanny Brice, whose vocal talents and comedic ability see her rise from Brooklyn music hall singer to Broadway star, featuring her stormy relationship with entrepreneur and gambler Nick Arnstein.
The musical brought global fame to Barbra Streisand when it opened on Broadway in 1963. It boasts some of the most iconic songs in film and theatre history, including People and Don’t Rain On My Parade. The Original Cast album reached #2 in the billboard charts and Streisand reprised the role in the 1966 London production as well as the 1968 film adaptation when she played opposite Omar Sharif as Arnstein.
The current touring production is the 2016 Menier Chocolate Factory revival, directed by Michael Mayer, which initially stared Sheridan Smith and Darius Campbell.
