Dolly Parton Musical coming to Edinburgh this autumn
9 to 5: The Musical clocks in to Playhouse on November 26
By Thom Dibdin
Dolly Parton’s 9 to 5: The Musical arrives at the Edinburgh Playhouse this autumn for a week-long stay, with tickets going on sale from nine to five this afternoon – that’s 4.51pm.
Using a book by Patricia Resnick, co-writer on the original movie, with music and lyrics by Dolly Parton, the musical is directed by Jeff Calhoun who has just directed Newsies – The Musical for Disney on Broadway. It gets its UK premiere at the Manchester Opera House on 12 October before going out on UK tour, with bookings up until January 2013.
Dolly Parton said today: “I am so excited that 9 to 5 the Musical is coming to Edinburgh. I’m hoping you have as much fun watching it as I had writing the music for it. 9 to 5 the Musical is perfect for anyone that’s ever wanted to string up their boss, which is almost all of us. So come join the fun!”
Producer Howard Panter added: “A hugely entertaining film has been turned in to a musical roller coaster of delight. Dolly Parton is a true global icon and her signature music will be an instant hit with musical theatre fans. This sharp, witty musical adventure is one of the most exciting new musicals to be hitting the UK stage.”
As a song, 9 to 5 was one of Parton’s biggest solo hits. It was nominated for an Academy Award and Golden Globe Award for Best Original Song and it topped the pop and country charts winning 2 Grammy Awards including best Country Song of the year.
Based on the 1980 movie staring Jane Fonda, Lily Tomlin, Dolly Parton, and Dabney Coleman, 9 to 5: The Musical centres on three office workers who turn the tables on their sexist, egotistical, lying, hypocritical bigot of a boss. They conspire to take control of the company and learn there’s nothing they can’t do.
Outrageous, thought-provoking and even a little romantic, 9 to 5: The Musical is about teaming up and taking care of business.
The show features Parton’s original hit title song, 9 to 5, and a new Tony and Grammy nominated score. It contains 18 original Dolly Parton numbers, including songs from her last two albums Backwoods Barbie, Shine Like the Sun, Get Out and Stay Out and Let Love Grow.
