Open Call for Drowsy Chaperone

Edinburgh Music Theatre has put out an open call for amateur performers to join the company for its Spring 2022 production: The Drowsy Chaperone, to be staged at the Church Hill Theatre.

EMT will be holding a welcome night and company auditions on Wednesday September 29 2021 at Barclay Viewforth Church Halls, Tollcross. Dance auditions and auditions for principle and featured roles will follow in the beginning of October. Rehearsals will start on Wednesday 13 October.

The Drowsy Chaperone

As previously announced, the show will run for five nights from Tuesday 19 to Saturday 23 April 2022 with a matinee on the Saturday. The EMT production will be directed by Jo Heinemeier with musical direction by Matthew Brown and choreography from Ashleigh Le Cras.

The Drowsy Chaperone has a book by Bob Martin and Don McKellar with music and lyrics by Lisa Lambert and Greg Morrison. The story concerns a musical theatre fan who sits listening to a record of their favourite musical, the fictional 1928 hit The Drowsy Chaperone.

As they listen to the record, the musical is comes to life onstage while they comment knowingly on the music, story, and actors. The result is a gentle, loving and very funny pastiche of the golden age of musicals.

welcome evening

EMT’s welcome evening is an opportunity for potential cast members to find out more about the company, meet recent and returning cast members, and find out a little more about the production itself from the creative team.

Anyone interested in joining EMT as a cast member for The Drowsy Chaperone, but who is not wishing to be considered for anything other than ensemble, will need to attend a company audition at the welcome evening.

A musical number will be taught to all participants during the welcome evening. Company auditions will be held with small groups at the end of the evening. Full audition materials for named and featured roles will be available following the welcome evening.

Rehearsals will start on Wednesday 13 October. EMT rehearse twice weekly on Wednesday evenings and Saturday mornings. As EMT is an adult company, auditions are open to everyone aged 18 and over.

All auditions and rehearsals will be carried out under the Covid-19 guidelines worked out with the Barlcay Viewforth Church Centre. These are well within current Scottish Government guidelines and include one metre distancing, masks when not singing and increased ventilation. EMT’s Covid policy is available here.
