Makars audition for fringe

The Edinburgh Makars have announced that their fringe production in 2015 will be The Game’s Afoot, or Holmes for the Holidays by Ken Ludvig.

Open auditions for the show are being held in their club rooms in Brunswick St Lane, off Montgomery Street, tonight (Tuesday 24 March), with a large range of parts on offer.

Dario Dalla Costa will be at the helm of this comedy thriller which will be staged at the company’s regular fringe venue of Murrayfield Parish Church Centre, Ormidale Terrace, EH12 6EQ from Thursday 6 to Saturday 15 August (not Sunday) at 7.30pm.

Ludvig’s script won the 2012 Edgar Award for Best Play from The Mystery Writers of America. It is set in 1936, when Broadway star William Gillette – admired the world over for his leading role in the play Sherlock Holmes – has invited his fellow cast-members to his Connecticut castle for a weekend of revelry.

But when one of the guests is stabbed to death, the festivities in this isolated house of tricks and mirrors quickly turn dangerous. Then it’s up to Gillette himself, as he assumes the persona of his beloved Holmes, to track down the killer before the next victim appears.

longer term commitment

Although the auditions are open to all, the club hope that auditionees will be looking for a longer term commitment, rather than wanting to appear in a single play and move on.

Company member Martin Burnell told Æ: “Our aim is to attract new members to the club, particularly those in the 25-40 age bracket. Anyone offered a part will be expected to join the club and pay the annual subscription, and we would hope they would stay in the longer term.”

Details of the casting call, with a note of the characters, are available on the Makars website: http://www.edinburghmakars.com/casting.html
