Gang Show 2015 Pictured
Here’s the first half…
Bringing “more than its quota of fun” to the King’s stage, the Edinburgh Gang Show 2015 succeeded in that tricky task of keeping the traditions alive while providing something fresh and invigorating.
To add to Hugh Simpson’s excellent review (read it here: ✭✭✭✭✩ Fresh), we are happy to be able to publish a selection of images from the production. Many thanks to photographer Scott Parker and to Scottie Walker for organising them.
A big classic opener from the Gang. I was tempted to crop right in on the performers, but Scott Parker has included a sly little peek into the pit! As with all the images, click on them to see a bigger version.
And here the performers are in more detail. Love the differing looks of concentration on their faces!
A bit of comedy for the second number, Step Back in Time, which allows the rest of the cast to change out of their Opener costumes.
Into something a bit more suitable to Get Funky in!
The first big song and dance routine: a combination of Just the Way You Are with a spot of that Uptown Funk.
Then it was off on The Trip – a comedy item set in Edinburgh Castle containing some effective local colour, “not least in the observation that lazy jokes about trams are well past their sell-by date”.
Then on to some more song and dance in the Over the Rainbow sequence, with Rainbow Connection, Bein’ Green and Up the Stairs.
The Junior Gang get their own major spot during the first half, with The Magic Kingdom, featuring songs from Smile and Teen Beach Movie.
And here are their soloists.
Off to shake away The Dust of Life next. With Cameron Kilgore taking the solo on Bui Doi from Miss Saigon making what seems at first glance a strange song choice for the show perfectly natural. And some genuine talent from Megan Day, who took the solo and led the tap-dancing on Brotherhood of Man.
Comedy routines have always been a big part of current director Andy Johnston’s Gang Shows. This year is no exception. Here’s a couple of images from The Clog Stomp.
And then it is off to visit the musical Memphis… Two songs from the comparatively unsung show closing the first act with a bang.
First the tremendous Helen Hunter with the musical’s opener: Underground – matched by Lucy Cowie’s astonishing power on its final number: Steal Your Rock N Roll.
Great stuff, which just left you gasping for more. As any first-half closing number certainly should. So why not go find a tub of icecream in the freezer – or refill that glass – and come back all fresh for some second half images.
