Hairspray’s Playhouse Return

Mar 4 2020 | By More

Good Morning Baltimore!

Hairspray the Musical has added Edinburgh dates to its 30 venue UK tour in 2020/21, with tickets on general sale from 10am today, Wednesday 4 March.

The show, which was already scheduled to play the Glasgow King’s in October this year, will now also be calling in at the Edinburgh Playhouse in January 2021 before nipping up to Inverness for a week at Eden Court.

It’s Baltimore in 1962 and Tracy Turnblad, a big girl with big hair and an even bigger heart, is on a mission to follow her dreams and join the elite Council of regular dancers on the Corny Collins TV show.

And not content with knocking the status quo in terms of size, if she had her way, every day would be Negro Day – not one day a month – in the segregated world of 1960s America.

Based on John Waters 1998 movie and its 2007 remake with John Travolta, Hairspray the Musical is a big old slice of bubble-gum fluff with a book by Mark O’Donnell and Thomas Meehan; Music by Marc Shaiman and Lyrics by Scott Wittman and Marc Shaiman.

It has toured to the Playhouse several time and seen amateur revivals from a clutch of Edinburgh companies. Click here for reviews.
