Call out for “innovative proposals” for 2018 event

The Hidden Door festival 2018 has put out an open call for new writing and innovative productions for its selected theatre programme, with a deadline of Friday 10 November 2017.

The non-profit multi-arts festival will take place from Friday May 25 to Sunday June 3 2018 at an as-yet unconfirmed location in Edinburgh. The call-out is to any theatre practitioner or company living in the UK, at any stage in their career.

The organisers say that they welcome proposals for any format of work, whether it is stage-based, site-specific, site-adaptable, perambulatory or otherwise experimental.

Productions chosen for the selected theatre programme will not attract a fee, although Hidden Door will source equipment on the company’s behalf and can provide costs up to £500 if required. Basic lighting, staging and PA system will be available in the venue.

Because the actual venue has not been announced – organisers just say that they are considering “several exciting options” – it is recommended that work is adaptable or flexible enough to work in a variety of different spaces.

The organisers say: “We are looking for innovative proposals; projects which innovate or develop the practice of the company or individuals, and/or are innovative interpretive productions, or demonstrate an innovative approach.”

They add that they will welcome proposals that use Hidden Door as part of the process to develop new writing and new productions, with scratch performances, and works in progress.

However, they emphasise that they will favour proposals which are for a run of shows on several different days over proposals for one-off performances.

2018 will be the festival’s fifth incarnation, after this year’s hugely successful event which helped transform Leith Theatre. Having started in the Market Street Vaults in 2014, it moved to the old street lighting depot on King’s Stables Road for two years, attracting 12,000 visitors in 2016.

Theatre is only one of several call-outs for new work. Visual art has already been released, with a deadline of 23 October, with further call-outs imminent for dance, spoken word, film and Music.
