Jaymi Hensley is Joseph
Dreamcoat role for Union J star
An excited Union J star Jaymi Hensley will be in the title role when the latest tour of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat arrives at the Edinburgh Playhouse in March 2019.
Bill Kenwright has additional new choreography from Gary Lloyd for his latest production of the young Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber’s first public collaboration. It sets out next week, arriving in Edinburgh on March 19 for its only Scottish dates and ending up in Oxford in July.
Rice and Lloyd-Webber’s melding of biblical tale and hugely hummable tunes was musical theatre alchemy. It retells the Genesis story of Joseph, son of Jacob, his eleven brothers and the coat of many, many colours. It travels with young Joseph to Egypt where he sold as a slave but rises up to be an advisor to Pharaoh.
Hensley, who will be taking his first role in a major musical, rose to fame on the X Factor in 2012 when four-piece boy band Union J finished fourth on the show.
Union J went on to have a top ten album and a major UK tour and Hensley later appeared on a number of hit TV shows, including BBC One’s Celebrity Masterchef.
Hensley will be joined on the tour by Trina Hill who will be reprising the role of the Narrator – which she played when Keith Jack first put on the coat of many colours at the Playhouse in 2010.
show-stopping
Andrew Geater will be taking on the role of Pharaoh, performed in the style of Elvis Presley, with his show-stopping numbers including Song of the King.
Jaymi Hensley says “I cannot describe how excited and honoured I am to be stepping into the prestigious coloured coat.
“When I think of iconic roles in musical theatre Joseph was always one that I dreamt of playing growing up! And to finally say that I am going to play it is a “dream” come true! I cannot wait to meet all of the loyal Joseph Fans and bring you my take of this amazing dream role.”
Besides donning the famous sequence of coats of many colours, he will have the chance to perform such memorable songs as Any Dream Will Do and Pharaoh’s Dream Explained as well as Close Every Door To Me.
Hensley, Hill and Geater are joined by an ensemble of Henry Metcalfe, Amber Kennedy, Matt Jolly, Joshua Robinson, Callum Connolly, Alex Hetherington, Arthur Boan, Mikey Jay-Heath, George Beet, Lewis Asquith, Ed Tunningley, Corey Mitchell, Eve Norris, Gemma Pipe and Jamie Jukes.
