Kinks musical for Playhouse in November

Ray Davies’ Kinks musical Sunny Afternoon is set to return to the Edinburgh Playhouse in November 2020 as the only Scottish stop on a 15 date tour. Tickets went on sale today, Friday 13 Dec 2019.

The tour kicks off in Manchester in August, rocks into the Playhouse Tue 10 – Sat 14 November and winds up in Birmingham in December 2020. The show premiered in the West End in 2014 and toured in 2016, visiting the Playhouse in September (★★★★☆ Kinky Bootiful).

Sunny Afternoon tells the story of the early life of Ray Davies and the rise to stardom of The Kinks, who brought a raw, energetic new sound on to the Sixties music scene.

Set against the backdrop of a Britain caught mid-swing between the conservative Fifties and riotous Sixties, this production explores the euphoric highs and agonising lows of the Kinks and how their music influenced future generations.

The original West End production won four Olivier Awards in 2015, including Best New Musical and Outstanding Achievement in Music for Ray Davies. It features some of The Kinks’ best-known songs, including You Really Got Me, Waterloo Sunset, All Day and All of the Night and Lola.

Announcing the tour, producer Sonia Friedman said: “I’ve loved this musical from the moment Ray Davies, Joe Penhall, Ed Hall and I started to develop it several years ago and am incredibly excited and proud that we are bringing back our joyous and celebratory Olivier Award-winning Best New Musical.

“The Kinks helped shape a generation and Ray’s beautifully truthful lyrics and music are as exhilarating and relevant today as the day he wrote them.”

Ray Davies added: “In these times of political uncertainties, it is a relief to know that Sunny Afternoon is on the horizon to lift our spirits.”
