Guys wanted
EMT short of men for Guys and Dolls
Edinburgh Music Theatre has put out an extended casting call for male performers to take part in its amateur presentation of Guys and Dolls at the King’s Theatre this May 2018.
The company held an open casting call in October, but while there are plenty of Galls, the company says it is a little short of male sinners, gamblers, and no-goodnicks to fill out the chorus. They are also looking for someone to play the role of Nicely Nicely Johnson, who gets to lead the wonderful Sit Down, You’re Rockin’ the Boat. NB: Applications for these opportunities have closed (Feb 2018).
The production will run nightly, Wednesday 2 to Saturday 5 May 2018, with a matinee on the Saturday. Rehearsals are Wednesday evenings 7pm – 10pm and Saturdays 10am-1pm at the Barclay Church, Bruntsfield. Cast members must be over 16 and available for the full weekend before production as well as all evenings in production week.
Anyone interested in joining the company for Guys and Dolls should get in touch by email at edinburghmusictheatre@live.com. Acceptance will be subject to a successful audition and normal company membership conditions apply – more details here: http://edinburghtheatre.co.uk/joining-us/.
Direction for the show has yet to be announced, although Bekki Wallace is returning to choreograph the company after her previous stint with them on The Producers in 2016.
Musical direction will be by Matthew Brown and Simon Lowe, who both have considerable professional musical theatre experience.
risqué yarns
Taking its cue from the risqué yarns of Damon Runyon, Guys and Dolls is set in the seedy nether world of 1940s New York, where compulsive gambler Nathan Detroit is desperate to find money to pay for his floating Craps game.
Premiering on Broadway in 1950 and London’s West End three years later, the stage musical has been something of a watertight hit ever since.
With music and lyrics by Frank Loesser and a book by Jo Swerling and Abe Burrows, Guys and Dolls is packed with recognisable hits. The show-stopping Sit Down – You’re Rockin’ the Boat led by underworld character Nicely-Nicely Johnson is just the start of a song list that includes A Bushell and A Peck, Luck Be A Lady and Sue Me.
