October 2024 Playhouse dates for Mormon musical

The Book of Mormon is returning to the Edinburgh Playhouse for a three week run, from Tue 15 Oct to Sat 2 Nov, 2024, with tickets now on general sale here.

The musical was last in Edinburgh in 2022, packing out the Playhouse for a four week run, much-rescheduled due to Covid. Although when we did get to see it, our critic found the production “problematic“, saying that the show’s depiction of Africa, “is a ragbag of the most hackneyed, ill-informed stereotypes imaginable.”

The musical follows a pair of Mormon boys sent on a mission to the inhabitants of a remote Ugandan village, a long way from their home in Salt Lake City. The earnest young men are challenged by the lack of interest from the locals, who are distracted by rather more pressing issues…

It is written by South Park creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone with Robert Lopez who co-created the Broadway musical Avenue Q and co-wrote the songs for Disney’s Frozen and Coco.

Since making its world premiere in March 2011 at New York’s Eugene O’Neill Theatre, where it won nine Tony Awards, including Best Musical, The Book of Mormon has been performed on three continents and won over thirty international awards.

The musical has smashed long-standing box office records in New York, London, Melbourne, Sydney and cities across the U.S.
