West Edinburgh amateurs hold hold open evening

Saughtonhall Drama Group is holding an open evening and audition for its Spring show, Cocoa and Cuddles by Jane Lockyer Willis, this Friday 26 January 2018.

The amateur company was formed in 1948. It meets and performs in the Saughtonhall Church, usually performing three productions every year – in the Spring, at the Fringe and a late Autumn pantomime.

The company has a strong reputation for thoughtful and inventive productions, staged to a very high standard. Standout shows in recent years include the 2015 EdFringe production of Gail Young’s Cheshire Cats (★★★★★ Great Big Grins). There have also been excellent stagings of Alan Cochrane’s Hatches, Matches and Despatches (★★★★☆ Beautiful timing) and  Ne’er The Twain (★★★★☆ Funny).

Following its four star production of Ladies Day at the 2017 fringe (★★★★☆ Good each-way bet), the company announced last October that it would not be staging its expected pantomime, but would be taking the time at its regular Friday night meetings to read some new plays and get ready for its Spring play.

Now the company is holding an open evening as a chance to meet with company members. Besides auditions for Cocoa and Cuddles, it is looking for people who would like to get involved in all the various off-stage elements of staging a show.

Cocoa and Cuddles by will be directed by Elizabeth Wilson, who made her directorial debut with Ladies Day. The two-act black comedy requires a cast of four female and three male actors. It will run Tuesday 17 – Sunday 21 April 2018 with rehearsals on Monday and Friday evenings.

The play concerns Frank, who has been tasked with arranging the funeral of his irascible old mother, Edith. Only to discover that she was a well-liked fun-loving member of a folk dancing club and had a toy boy…

The company says: “Whether you fancy treading the boards, building sets, making costumes or helping front of house, we’d love to meet you. No experience needed! All you need to bring is your enthusiasm.”

The company is affiliated to the Edinburgh district of the Scottish Community Drama Association. Membership is set at £5 a year.
