FCT to stage Pippin at #EdFringe 2017

Forth Children’s Theatre has put out an open casting call for its Edinburgh Fringe offering for 2017, when it will be staging the original musical Pippin for ten performances only.

Auditions will be on Sunday 9 April at Trinity Academicals Rugby Club in Criaghall Gardens, running from 10am to 6pm. They are open to youngsters who will be aged 10 or over and 18 or under at the start of show week.

With lyrics and music by Steven Schwartz – whose other shows include both Godspell and Wicked – the musical has a book by Roger O. Hirson. Pippin premiered in 1972 and had a successful Broadway revival in 2013, winning multiple Tony Awards both times.

The FCT production will be directed by Hayley Scott who has been a performing member of FCT for several years. Returning to the company after this Easter’s production of Bugsy will MD Gus Harrower, who was winner of Scotland Rocks and is a long time FCT cast member, and choreographer Natasha Rose who is another long time cast member.

The musical uses the construct of a troupe of travelling players to tell the story of Pippin, the son of an eighth century emperor, King Charlemagne the Great. The young prince longs to discover the secret of true happiness and fulfilment. He seeks it in the glories of the battlefield, the temptations of life and the intrigues of political power – after disposing of his father. But finds it, ultimately, in the simple pleasures of home and family.

Events are conducted by the all-powerful Leading Player – at one point the Player brings Charlemagne back to life when Pippin regrets his actions in killing his father.

Incidentally, the performers of the role of Leading Player won a Tony in both the original production and the revival. That was Ben Vereen with Best Actor in a Musical in 1973 and Patina Miller getting Best Actress in a Musical in 2013, making it the only role to date for which a Tony has been won by both a male and a female performer.

Anyone who wishes to audition for the Forth Children Theatre production of Pippin should email hayleyscott97@gmail.com for further information and to confirm attendance.

Anyone auditioning should turn up for a 10am start and be prepared to stay all day to 6pm.
