Queen of Ozzy Desert drags back into town

Priscilla Queen of the Desert has been announced as the Playhouse’s Christmas offering this year, opening on December 15 for a fortnight’s run to January 2, 2016.

The show toured to the Playhouse in both 2013 and 2014, with Jason Donovan in the lead role of Tick, the Sydney drag queen with a secret wife and child back home in Alice Springs.

When Tick’s wife calls in a favour he enlists the help of a couple of drag queens and they set off in a big pink bus across the desert to perform in the Alice Springs casino.

Casting for the 2015 return to Edinburgh has yet to be announced. And the dates are not part of the major UK tour, opening in Manchester in August and running through to April in 2016, with Duncan James from pop-band Blue as Tick.

Based on the 1994 movie, the musical features a dazzling array of outrageous costumes and a hit parade of dancefloor favorites including Say a Little Prayer, Go West and Always on My Mind. Whether it’s Raining Men or Girls just Wanting to Have Fun, it’s all Hot Stuff!.

Æ’s review of the 2013 tour described the show as: “a great big pile of plastic, fantastic fluff. With a cherry on top. And a feather. Well, several feathers.” Although our reviewer of the 2014 return was not as kind to Jason Donovan!
