Three Captivate shows for new Gilded Balloon fringe venue

Edinburgh theatre company Captivate, is to take its three hit “Shakin’ Shakespeare” adaptations to the National Museum of Scotland for the fringe 2016.

The hour-long shows, written by Sally Lyall and Tommie Travers, provide new slants on Macbeth, Hamlet and Romeo and Juliet, using songs, slapstick and fast-paced storytelling.

The company will be keeping its musicals offering with the Famous Spiegeltent in St Andrew Square, as previously reported on Æ.

The Gilded Balloon is taking over the 200 seat Chamber Street Museum’s Auditorium during the fringe. The three Shakespeare productions will rotate over a three day cycle, running from Wednesday 3 to Monday 29 August.

The shows will run every day 11.45am for an hour. Brave Macbeth (2015 review) opens on  August 3; Cheer Up Hamlet (2015 review) on August 4 and Romantic Romeo (2015 review) on August 5. Entry will be through the museum doors on Lothian Street.

Captivate’s Tommie Travers told Æ: “Gilded Balloon at The National Museum of Scotland offers a family-friendly, educational and (most importantly) fun daytime programme and we feel our Shakin’ Shakespeare series is a perfect fit.”

He added that it is a “canny move by both parties and mutually beneficial.”

Famous Spiegeltent

Travers also revealed that the company will not be using Broughton High School for public performances, as it has done in recent years, but will be showing all its musical productions at the Famous Spiegeltent.

He said: “We’ve also made the bold move to take our summer school productions to the Spiegeltent to give our youngsters that proper Fringe experience. We will continue using Broughton High School as a rehearsal venue, but all performances with be in the tent in St Andrew Square.”

This year’s musicals are Sunshine on Leith (Aug 3 – 29, 5.15pm) and Oliver! (Aug 5 – 15, 2.30pm), as well as the Schools edition of Les Misérables (Aug 19 – 29, 2pm) and a summer-school production of Bugsy Malone (Aug 5 – 14, 12 noon).
