Adult roles in Spring Awakening up for grabs

Local youth company Shoogly Peg Productions is staging the musical version of Spring Awakening in June and is looking for two adults to perform in the show.

The production will play four performances at St Stephens, Stockbridge, from Thursday 29 June to Saturday 1 July, with a matinee and an evening performance on the Saturday.

The show is being staged by two young casts. The first performing on Thursday and Saturday evenings, the second on Friday evening and Saturday matinee.

The company is looking for two performers over 40 to play the roles of the Adult Women and the Adult Men. The show has 14 named adult characters, who are played by the same male and female performers.

Spring Awakening won the 2007 Tony Award for Best Musical – and six more Tonys. It is based on the highly controversial (and often-censored) 1891 play by German playwright Frank Wedekind.

With music by Duncan Sheik and lyrics by Steven Sater, it is the story of sexual awakening, youth revolt, and self-discovery into a new century.

In 1891, Headstrong Melchior and naive Wendla stumble into each others’ arms, passionate and curious, while anxious Moritz struggles to live up to the stringent expectations of society. With only each other for guidance, this group of young men and women travel the fraught and rocky path of adolescence, discovering their bodies, their minds, and themselves along the way.
