Stick Man for Xmas 2014
Edinburgh’s Xmas gives 20% discount for EH residents
Full details of Edinburgh’s Christmas 2014 have been announced, with a small selection of performances in St Andrew Square, where the 635-seat Paradiso Spiegeltent will again be placed.
Running from November 21, Edinburgh’s Christmas organised events are again centred around St Andrew Square and Princes Street Gardens East. And once again, anyone with an EH postcode can get a 20% discount to all ticketed events.
The main theatre production for children is the return of Edinburgh fringe favourite, Stick Man. Scamp Theatre’s hugely successful adaptation of Julia Donaldson’s children’s book, illustrated by her Gruffalo collaborator Axel Scheffler, will be playing in the Spiegeltent, St Andrew Square 22 November – January 4.
Other family entertainment includes the Brat Kids Carnival, appearing over the Christmas and New Year weekends. A lineup of circus artists and mischief makers this is a technicolour cabaret which is “ideal for the younger theatre-goer with a taste for wild circus skills, pumping music, ridiculous acts of amazement, and eye-popping party tricks”.
For the even younger audience member, Baby Loves Disco is returning for Sunday afternoons at the St Andrew Square Spiegeltent, November 23 – December 21.
Hot from Sidney
Adult entertainment comes from a pair of Australian troupes with a trio of appearances from Mr Al Murray with The Pub Landlord’s Festive Saloon, December 29-31.
The main event from November 22 – December 21 is Australian theatre troupe Scotch & Soda. Hot from the Brisbane and Sydney festivals, the show features live music from The Crusty Suitcase Band, with circus acts whose previous appearances include Cantina, La Clique, Circa and Tom Tom Crew, transforming the spiegeltent into “a jazz-soundtracked den of iniquity”.
Arriving on December 18 is Briefs: “the all male, sharp-shooting cabaret of burlesque with balls, high flying circus bandits and savage gender offenders”. Described as an Aussie Cirque du Soleil meets Ru Paul’s Drag Race, Briefs: The Second Coming stays on to January 4, taking over the main evening slot from December 22.
Commenting on this year’s programme, Charlie Wood and Ed Bartlam of organisers Underbelly said: “We’re very excited about this year’s innovations, including the new ice rink in St Andrew Square around the Melville Monument; the expanded Santa Land in Princes Street Gardens with more affordable attractions; and the new family prices and the 20% EH residents’ discount across the board.
“We want this to be a Christmas for all of Edinburgh and we think there’s something for everyone – from Scotch & Soda in the Spiegeltent to our Stained Glass project where 24 Edinburgh primary schools will show off their creations in Princes Street Gardens.”
