11 nominations for Traverse shows at CATS

The short list of nominations for the 2018/2019 Critics Awards for Theatre in Scotland have been announced with the Traverse involved in over a quarter of the total nominations.

The Critics nominate four productions in each of ten categories, making a total of 40 nominations. This year, these are shared between 17 different productions – of which nine getting nods in just one category.

Toping the nominations is My Left/Right Foot, The Musical, the Birds of Paradise, NTS co-production which has six, including best production, best music, best technical presentation, best ensemble and two nominations for Robert Softley Gale for both best new play and best direction.

Among the other multiple nominations, Ballyturk from the Tron Theatre received nominations in five categories, Lost at Sea by Morna Young, which is coming to the King’s on May 20, receives four and there are two for The End of Eddy from Untitled projects which premiered at the EIF last year.

The Traverse’s nominations come for Ulster American, which has four nods, Mouthpiece and What Girls Are Made Of which have three each and The Mack, the A Play a Pie and a Pint co-production, for which John Mitchie is nominated in the best male performance category.

Ulster American gets a nod for Best Production with Lucianne McEvoy up for best female performance, Darrell D’Silva for best male performance, and David Ireland for best new play.

What Girls Are Made Of is also in the Best Production category, with Michael John McCarthy up for best music and Cora Bissett for best female performance.

Nominations for Mouthpiece go to Lorn Macdonald for best male performance, Keiren Hurley for best new play and outgoing Traverse AD Orla O’Lochlin for best director.

Baba Yaga, which was a hit for Imaginate and the Australian Windmill Theatre Company at last year’s Children’s Theatre Festival is nominated in four categories: best music, design, technical presentation and best new play for its devisers, Shona Reppe, Christine Johnston and Rosemary Myers.

The Lyceum has just one nomination, with Jessica Hardwick nominated for her performance of Roxane in Cyrano de Bergerac, the co-production with the Glasgow Citizens and NTS.

The critics considered a total 166 eligible new productions made in Scotland over the theatre year May 2018-April 2019. From these they produced a long-list of 57 productions, and this shortlist containing 17 productions.

The ten winners will be announced at a ceremony at the Glasgow Tramway on Sunday 9 June in the afternoon.
