VoiceArc’s final dates for Le Nozze

Edinburgh-based opera company VoiceArc is giving its production of Le Nozze di Figaro one last spin around the block, this coming Monday and Tuesday, 19/20 December 2016.

The production will play Broughton St Mary’s Church for two nights before entering what the company call a “retirement period”. They will be back in May 2017 with a production of Don Giovani.

Rosie Simpson of company’s social media team told Æ: “After two successful runs in Edinburgh and a performance as the first full opera ever performed in the Stirling Fringe we will retire our debut production to make room for new and exciting adaptations.

“Look out for our unique takes on Don Giovanni, Ariadne auf Naxos and Carmen over the next year.”

VoiceArc’s take on Mozart’s Le Nozze di Figaro (The Marriage of Figaro) mixes traditional and classic with the edgy and contemporary. It is set in a seedy Edinburgh underworld and features a cast of insalubrious characters including hit men, lap dancers, escorts and ageing madams.

drugs and prostitution

The opera charts a humorous yet profound tale of love, lust, betrayal and forgiveness. Almaviva (il Conte) is having the day of all days. Suddenly made the head of his Scottish-Italian crime family, he is trying to keep control of his drugs and prostitution empire. To make matters worse, his fixer and hit-man Figaro, is marrying his most popular club escort and lap-dancer Susanna, herself the object of il Conte’s lust.

He attempts to foil the marriage by scheming with the club drag-queen, and Il Conte’s biggest fan, Basilio, and ageing brothel madame Marcellina, but instead facilitates two marriages and even gives his neglected and bored aristocratic young wife hope for the future. He is left with a troubled heart and, crucially, no Susanna.

The production will be sung in Italian with “English” surtitles.

The company return to Broughton St Mary’s with another Mozart favourite, Don Giovani, for a three night run from May 12 – 14 2017.

Dates and details of Voice Arc’s productions of Richard Strauss’s Ariadne auf Naxos and Georges Bizet’s Carmen are not yet finalised.
