Wicked flies into Edinburgh for Xmas 2014

Smash hit musical to get 8 week run at Playhouse

It’s going to be a wicked festive season in Edinburgh next year, as Wicked, the musical is announced for an eight week run at the Edinburgh Playhouse.

Opening on 19 November 2014, the UK and Ireland touring production will play through to 10 January 2015. Tickets go on public sale from 21 November this year.

Wicked builds on the idea that Dorothy’s famous triumph over the Wicked Witch as depicted in the Wizard of Oz only reflected one side of the story.

It is based on Gregory Maguire’s 1995 novel, Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West, which re-imagines the Land of Oz and creates a parallel universe to L. Frank Baum’s familiar story, published as The Wonderful Wizard of Oz in 1900.

Wicked, then, is the untold story of the unlikely but profound friendship between two girls who first meet as sorcery students at Shiz University: the blonde and very popular Glinda and a misunderstood green girl named Elphaba.

General Manager of The Edinburgh Playhouse Jo Beale said: “We are delighted to announce that Wicked will be at the Edinburgh Playhouse next year. This award winning show is a fantastic production that we know our audience will love. This confirms our commitment to continue to bring only the best Broadway shows to Edinburgh.”

This UK & Ireland tour premiered in Manchester on 17 September this year and will visit Dublin, Milton Keynes, Cardiff, Glasgow, Leeds, Birmingham, Liverpool and Southampton before arriving in Edinburgh.

ATG Theatre Card Members will be able to book Ediburgh performancdes from this Monday, 4 November, with bookings for groups opening the following week on Monday 11 November.
