Playhouse opportunity

All Edinburgh Theatre is teaming up with Edinburgh Playhouse to offer the opportunity for four young people to review the 2018 touring production of Crazy for You.

As part of Scotland’s Year of Young People, the Playhouse is offering four budding reviewers the chance to experience life as a professional by attending the press night for Crazy For You on Tuesday 3 April.

And All Edinburgh Theatre has agreed to publish the best review online, as well as talking to all four reviewers before the show about reviewing techniques and what makes a good review.

The opportunity is open to anyone aged between 16 and 25, with a deadline of this Sunday 25 March, 2018.

To take part, potential reviewers should go to the Edinburgh Playhouse Facebook page and provide a one sentence review of their favourite play, musical or film in the comments of the post pinned to the top of the page.

Announcing the initiative, head of sales and marketing at the Playhouse, Pam Aldred, said: “We’re delighted to be able to offer budding young writers the chance to come and review Crazy for You, the ultimate feel-good musical set to some of Gershwin’s most memorable hits.

“Not only does this allow a whole new audience to experience these classic songs and the thrill of live theatre, but the successful four writers will gain valuable experience and guidance from the respected editor and reviewer of AllEdinburghTheatre.com, Thom Dibdin.”

Crazy For You charts the troubled love story of Bobby, son of a wealthy New York banking family and frustrated Broadway hoofer, with Polly, daughter of the proprietor of a failing theatre in Deadrock, Nevada.

Sent to close the theatre down, Bobby falls for Polly and, in the guise of a Hungarian impresario, decides to save the theatre by putting on a show.

Girl Crazy

The show was first staged in 1992, when it was hailed as the moment that Broadway “rose up to grab the musical back from the British” in the New York Times review. However, although the book by Ken Ludwig was new, it was based on Girl Crazy, a 1930s musical by Ira and George Gershwin.

It features a wealth of memorable tunes, including I Got Rhythm, They Can’t Take That Away From Me, Nice Work If You Can Get It and Embraceable You – some of which were in the original and others borrowed from different musicals by the Gershwin brothers.

This touring production, from the Watermill Theatre, stars Tom Chambers as Bobby with Claire Sweeney as Irene, the wealthy woman to whom Bobby has been engaged for five years, and Charlotte Wakefield as Polly.
