The Brunton Theatre in Musselburgh has launched a new amateur theatre group for adults to add to its existing performance group for young people – the Brunton Youth Theatre.

The Brunton Theatre Players will meet weekly at the at Brunton Theatre rehearsal room, with the first meeting on Monday 30 January. The theatre is inviting participants who wish to work with a theatre professional to explore characters, plot and staging to get in touch. The aim is to stage a performance at the Brunton Theatre later this year.

A spokeswoman for the Brunton told the Annals: “We have talked about the idea of an older drama group for a while, as our Brunton Youth Theatre participants often state an interest in continuing when they reach 18 – the maximum age for BYT. Brunton Theatre Players will be for all ages over 18. A good mix of ages would be great for the group dynamic!”

A professional tutor has not yet been chosen for the adult group, but the Brunton management is currently in conversation with a number of theatre professionals who are interested in taking on the role. It is also interested to hear from any experienced professionals who would be interested in working with them.

Besides the BYT, the Brunton already plays host to the Musselburgh Amateur Musical Association (MAMA) which currently performs a musical in the spring and a revue in early January. The Brunton Theatre Players will not be working on musical theatre.

The spokeswoman added: “The thinking behind Brunton Theatre Players is to offer something different to other amateur theatre groups in the area. Participants should be interested in developing their theatre skills, working with a range of texts, and the group will be involved in choosing which plays to work on.

“January is the time of New Year’s resolutions, often when people decide to make an effort to get out the house, try something different – or reinvigorate old interests. So we though this would be an ideal time to launch a new drama group for adults.”

Anyone wanting to take part should call the Brunton Theatre box office on  0131 665 9900 or email artsservice@eastlothian.gov.uk for more information.

Those who might want to be involved in tutoring the group should also email artsservice@eastlothian.gov.uk

Brunton Theatre Players is open to anyone aged 18 or over.
The first session will take place on Monday 30 January, 7pm – 9pm, at Brunton Theatre Rehearsal Room. There will be a weekly charge of £3 payable in advance in term blocks.

  1. I’m interested in the Brunton Theatre Players. I haven’t acted in years. Is there anyone else there over 60? I used to be in the St. Michael Players. Any ex members there that I would know? Thanks
