Captivate stage Nativity! the Musical

Local company Captivate Theatre is bringing a production of Nativity! The Musical to Edinburgh for six performances only this Christmas, alongside its new take on A Christmas Carol.

The production of Nativity! the Musical is breaking new ground for Captivate, which will stage it in the Fettes College theatre from Thursday 15 to Sunday 18 December 2022 at 7.30pm, with matinee performances on the Saturday and Sunday.

Feel-good, funny and full of joy, this cracker of a musical was adapted for the stage by Debbie Isitt, the creator of the much-loved films, co-composed with Nicky Ager and with orchestrations by George Dyer.

Most schools go for a simple Nativity but at St Bernadette’s, they’re attempting to mount a musical version. Only trouble is teacher Mr Maddens has promised that a Hollywood producer is coming to see the show.

Faithful to the movie, the show includes his teaching assistant the crazy Mr Poppy, hilarious children and a whole lot of sparkle and shine as they struggle to make everyone’s Christmas wish come true.

Martha Broderick, who is playing one of the children, Star, says “I love being in Nativity because it is a really fun show with catchy songs and hilarious characters. It’s the best show to get you in the mood for Christmas.”

festive family favourite

“Nativity is a great story with the children at its heart,” agrees John Knox who is playing Mr Maddens. “The film has become a festive family favourite and this musical adaptation brings the spirit of the movie to the stage with some memorable new songs to add a Christmas sparkle.”

The Musical features all of the favourite sing-a-long hits from the films including Sparkle and Shine, Nazareth, One Night One Moment, She’s the Brightest Star and a whole host of new songs filled with the spirit of Christmas!

Captivate regular Hazel Beattie, who was Jean in the recent run of Sunshine on Leith, adds: This show has the ingredients all the family will love. Cute kids, hilarious script, fantastic music and a huge smothering of Christmas feel-good magic.”

The Captivate Christmas Carol

The run is on top of a mini-tour of the company’s new adaptation of Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol to churches in and around Edinburgh. The show blends Dickens’ tale with a cappella versions of traditional carols such as O’ Holy Night, God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen and Silent Night.

Early reports from The Captivate Christmas Carol’s sold-out nights at Roslyn Chapel speak highly of the show which arrives at St Mark’s Unitarian Church, Castle Terrace, for two performances only on the Friday 16 and Saturday 17 of December at 7.30pm.
