Physical theatre training course announced

Fife College is offering a one year diploma in Physical Theatre Practice, delivered at Summerhall for three days a week starting this month.

The 35 week practical-based course is aimed at those performers who wish to develop the physical aspect of their practice. It will be lead by Simon Abbott, with support from the Fife College staff.

According to the course material, it offers an “intensive experiential learning opportunity” to those who have some background as performance practitioners or facilitators, to “learn or develop the skills, vocabulary and techniques that underpin theatre where the performance ‘text’ is derived from the body rather than the voice.”

Students will be involved with creating work and will be showing work at the Manipulate festival in February. It was originally launched in 2009 in association with The Arches in Glasgow.

The course aims to make participants better equipped to work collaboratively, to ‘play’ more freely and to develop and edit the physical (as opposed to vocal) text of a piece. They will have direct experience of a practitioner or company working in contemporary physical or visual theatre.

Theatre du Soleil

Abbott told Æ that he is expecting to collaborate with Alex Rigg and the team from his  performance theatre company Oceanallover, as well as the course’s two patron’s from Theatre du Soleil although Abbott does point out that they are making work in India at the moment.

The course’s core units are: Physical theatre performance skills; physical theatre production; movement in performance and integrated performance. There will be further support units available in scenography and direction; performance combat; puppetry; maskwork; street/site-responsive theatre and contextual studies.

The course will involve explorations in clown, physical storytelling, neutral mask, chorus and melodrama.

Cost for British and EU students is £1,825 and £6,300 for international students.
