Casting Call for A Few Good Men

Beam Theatre has put out a casting call for its February 2017 production of A Few Good Men, by West Wing creator Aaron Sorkin.

Auditions for this young company’s third production will take place on Tuesday 6 and Thursday 8 September at the Scottish Storytelling Centre, running from 7pm to 9pm on both nights.

The play, which premiered in 1989, already features the quick-fire dialogue which was to become Sorkin’s trademark. It is set in Guantanamo Bay – before it became a military prison – and the subsequent court martial of two US Marines charged with murder of a fellow platoon member.

They are assigned a rookie Navy lawyer, who expects a plea-bargain and cover-up of what really happened. But as the two suspects are adamant that they were obeying orders, his defence begins to uncover the truth and ask questions of nature of honour, dignity and justice.

Sorkin adapted his script for the 1992 film directed by Rob Reiner, starring Tom Cruise, Jack Nicholson and Demi Moore. The play had its London West End debut in 2005.

Beam Theatre’s Andra Roston told Æ: “We have decided to try out some different staging this year, since we always like to keep pushing ourselves creatively.”

American accents

With a named cast of 14, but only one named female role, the company is looking for a large number of male performers. Playing age is from about 19 to mid-fifties. It is particularly keen to hear auditonee’s American accents, “to see what we’re working with!”. There are also several non-speaking roles which will involve a lot of stage time, and are gender neutral.

The production will be staged at the Assembly Roxy, February 8 – 11 2017, and all company members will be asked for a £25 show fee to help cover the costs of this amateur production.

Auditionees are asked to attend for the whole of the auditions, as they might be called more than once. There is no need to book a place, but early arrival is advised to sign in at the start.

If cast, company rehearsals are expected to be Monday and Thursday evenings, with some longer
Sunday rehearsals.

The company’s first production was I Hate Hamlet in 2015. They staged Madhuri Shekar’s In Love and Warcraft at the Roxy in January this year.
