Open audition for Musselburgh Steamie

The Brunton has put out an open call for an amateur actress to play Doreen in its EdFringe 2023 production of The Steamie, playing the Loretto Theatre, following its sell-out production in January.

The amateur production of Tony Roper and David Anderson’s classic Scottish drama will be directed by David Ross with Tommie Travers on MD duties, playing five performances in the final week of this year’s Fringe.

Doreen in a previous production of The Steamie from The Brunton.

The Steamie is set in Glasgow, Hogmanay 1950, at an old public laundry house. Doreen, Magrit, Dolly and Mrs Culfeathers’ are doing the final wash of the year as they blether about the past, the future, and being pals.

Doreen is the guileless young woman whose idea of nirvana is a Drumchapel council house and all the latest modern, labour-saving appliances that come with it. There is an irony to had between her aspirations and what was to come for the area.

The Steamie will run at Loretto School Theatre (access from Millhill opposite the turnstiles for Musselburgh Racecourse) as part of the Edinburgh Fringe. Performances Wednesday 23 – Saturday 26 August at 7.30pm each evening with a Saturday matinee at 2pm.

Open auditions for the role of Doreen will take place on Tuesday 4 July between 7pm and 9pm at The Fisherrow Centre, South St, Musselburgh EH21 6AT.
