Free EdFringe 2023 app now available to download

The official Edinburgh Fringe app, detailing all shows on at the fringe, is now available to download from both the Apple App Store and Google Play.

The Fringe Society caused outrage from fringe companies in 2022 when it failed to produce an app for that year’s fringe. The Society has now found a new sponsor, Playbill, and the app is back with added features.

The 2023 app includes many features familiar from previous years, such as the ability to filter listings by genre and to find shows starting soon using the ‘nearby now’ function.

The big new function is a reminder that will allow users to enable a push notification for their next show, although it is not clear how long in advance this will be sent to your phone, or whether that can be altered.

Audiences looking for inspiration can use the ‘shake to search’ feature, providing them with a random show suggestion.

Planning

The app has strong planning facilities. Users can log into the app using their existing EdFringe login details which will then link the online account to the app, so any favourites chosen in one place will also appear in the other.

The online Planning Calendar, available in the “my account” area of the EdFringe website, is linked to a My Planner function on the app. You can save particular performances of a show here, and it is where any booked tickets will show up.

App users will also be able to book tickets and store e-ticket QR codes in their account area, and booked performances will be integrated into users’ daily show schedule.

Shona McCarthy, Chief Executive of the Edinburgh Festival Fringe Society, said: “We’re thrilled that the app is out of development and ready to download, giving eager Fringe-goers yet another way to find new shows and discover their new favourite artists.

“I’d like to encourage everyone to explore the various features on offer – particularly ‘shake to search’, introducing them to entirely new and random show suggestions – and to ‘fill their boots’ when it comes to booking shows”

The official EdFringe 2023 app is available to download now. Users will be invited to submit feedback on the app and make suggestions on new features, which will go towards the development of the EdFringe app in future.
