Girl from the North Country for Edinburgh Playhouse

Girl from the North Country, the musical written and directed by Conor McPherson using Bob Dylan’s music and lyrics has announced October 2022 dates at the Edinburgh Playhouse.

The show, which features 19 Bob Dylan songs, will play the Edinburgh Playhouse from Tuesday 18 to Saturday 22 October (book here), with dates at the Glasgow Theatre Royal from Tuesday 13 to Saturday 17 September (book here) as part of the UK and Ireland leg of its International tour.

Girl From The North Country is described as “an uplifting and universal story about family and love which boldly reimagines the legendary songs of Bob Dylan, like you’ve never heard them before.”

Duluth, Minnesota. 1934 American when the country is in the grips of the Great Depression. In a community living on a knife-edge, lost and lonely people huddle together in the local guesthouse.

The owner, Nick, owes more money than he can ever repay, his wife Elizabeth is losing her mind and their daughter Marianne is carrying a child no one will account for.

So, when a preacher selling bibles and a boxer looking for a comeback turn up in the middle of the night, things spiral beyond the point of no return…””

Olivier Awards

Girl From The North Country first opened at The Old Vic in London in July 2017,and won the 2018 Olivier Awards for Best Actress in a Musical and Best Supporting Actress in a Musical as well as being nominated in the Best New Musical, Outstanding Achievement in Music and Best Actor in a Musical categories.

The UK and Ireland leg of the tour will open in Dublin for a five week season on June 25. It has dates booked through to January 2023.

Writer and director Conor McPherson said “Collaborating with Bob Dylan has been a unique privilege for me. We have had an amazing journey opening on Broadway and in the West End but I feel particularly excited and moved to finally bring this work to my home town of Dublin and on tour around the UK.”

Bob Dylan said: “To be associated with Conor is one of the highlights of my professional life. It goes without saying the man is a genius for putting this thing together and I’m thrilled to be a part of the experience. My songs couldn’t be in better hands.”

Casting will be announced at a later date.

The production features scenic and costume design by Rae Smith. Orchestrations, arrangements and music supervision are by Simon Hale, with additional arrangements by Simon Hale and Conor McPherson. Lighting design is by Mark Henderson; sound design by Simon Baker and movement direction by Lucy Hind.
