Bare Productions issue open call for EdFringe 22

Edinburgh amateur musicals group Bare Productions has put out an open call for self-taped online auditions for its planned Edinburgh Fringe 2022 production of Kinky Boots.

The company is seeking amateur performers for all the show’s named characters who are strong actors first and foremost, followed by excellent singers. Initial tapes for the two-part audition process need to be submitted by 6pm on Friday 14 January.

Bare Productions is aiming to stage Kinky Boots at EdFringe 2022

Full details of the show, cast breakdown and how to audition are available in the Audition Pack here. Call backs will also be by self-taped recording, which will need to be completed over the weekend of Sat 15/Sun 16 February.

The show is expected to run for nine performances in this year’s Fringe, from Fri 5 – Sat 13 August 2022, in Paradise Green. Weekly rehearsals will begin in February, growing more frequent as the production dates approach.

Bare Productions was set up in 2017 “with the vision of providing local Edinburgh talent with the opportunity to be a part of professional-standard, smaller-scale shows.” It’s first two shows were You’re a Good Man Charlie Brown in 2018 and The Addams Family in 2019.

It is now moving on to Kinky Boots, the musical based on 2005 British film of the same name inspired by true events. It tells the story of Charlie Price who inherits a shoe factory from his father and forms an unlikely partnership with Drag Queen Lola to produce a line of high-heeled boots and save the business.

In the process, Charlie and Lola discover that they are not so different after all.

fun and light-heartedness

The company says: “What really excites us about this show is both that it is rooted in a true story, and that it has wonderful key messages. The show brings together the modern, dynamic community of Drag with the menial, working-class workers of the factory – many of whom share outdated and ugly opinions.

“Our intention is to find the fun and light-heartedness in the musical through the songs and choreography, whilst allowing for the grit of the storyline to permeate through strong interpretation of the dialogue. The aesthetic in our branding and technical elements will also be embedded in reality.

“It is vitally important for us that all named characters are strong actors first and foremost, followed by excellent singers. People often assume Kinky Boots is a “dance show” when in reality it is heavily reliant on scene work and acting through song. However, Lola’s ‘Angels’ in the show provide the majority of the choreography and should be strong dancers and singers.”

diverse and welcoming

Bare Productions says they are committed to making the Scottish amateur drama scene a more diverse and welcoming landscape through performance, learning and supportive action.

“Kinky Boots tackles themes of misogyny, homophobia, gender identity and racism,” they add.

“We are committed to casting appropriately and accurately in our upcoming show. We are looking for Black performers to play Lola and are also looking for other POC, LGBTQ+ and Disabled performers to play other roles in the show.”
