EMT casting call for Fiddler on the Roof

Edinburgh Music Theatre has put out a casting call for singers, actors and dancers as it moves to the Kings Theatre for its April 2017 production of Fiddler on the Roof.

The local amateur company will be holding an informal open evening on September 14 for existing and prospective members to meet the production team of director Ian Hammond Brown and MD Paul Gudgin and hear their ideas for the production.

Company auditions will be held on 17 September with auditions for principal and named roles on 21 September. The open meeting and auditions will all be held in the company’s regular rehearsal venue in the Barclay Viewforth Church Centre, Wrights Houses.

Set in the small Russian village of Anatevka, Fiddler on the Roof follows the story of Tevye, a poor milkman, and his family as they try to stick to traditions while navigating the stormy waters of life in a Jewish community in Russia during the early years of the 20th Century.

Premiering in 1964, the musical features music by Jerry Bock, lyrics by Sheldon Harnick and a book by Joseph Stein. Based on Tevye and His Daughters, a series of stories by Sholem Aleichem, the original production bagged nine Tony awards, including Best Musical, while the 1971 film adaptation was the highest grossing film of that year.

Hazel Beattie, chair of the EMT board, said: “We can’t wait to bring Fiddler on the Roof to the King’s Theatre next year. We’re looking for talented people to join our cast, no matter how much previous experience they have.

“EMT is a warm, welcoming group and we love to get to know new people and foster new talent. This is a fantastic opportunity to perform this beautiful musical on a major stage.”
